"does it ever heal properly" was asked about trauma.
Imagine if you take a ceramic vase and drop it, it is now in pieces. Pick up each piece and glue it back together. The vase is put back together, but it will never be EXACTLY the same as before it was dropped. That doesn't mean it is "bad" or undesirable, if anything it is now more unique and complex and those glued cracks (internal scars) enable them to go deeper within themselves.
I would say, they heal to a new and better form inshallah
